Sermon | "Worship: A Communal Posture" | May 12
Sunday May 12, 2024
Sunday May 12, 2024
It seems odd, in one of the only times Jesus mentions the word "church" He is, geographically, as far away as possible from the temple. We know, have often sung cute songs as kids, that the church is more than a building - the church is a people. Worship, from the time Israel was rescued from the clutches of Egypt, has always been communal. Worship is a people who profess the lordship of Jesus, and surrender to His sovereignty...time and time again. In fact, a church that prioritizes worship will wreck the gates of hell.

Sermon | "Worship: Our Posture" | May 5

Surprisingly, Jesus doesn't mention the word worship very often. In fact, He uses the word in two narratives that have little to do with what we think about worship: namely, His temptation in the desert and conversing with a woman at a well. But, in both cases, Jesus is clear about worship as a posture. Worship begins with God's posture and continues in our posture toward Him. Worship is a posture of surrender - to who God is and what He has done.

Sermon | "God's Posture" | April 28

Worship begins long before people step into a church. It begins long before we open our mouths to sing or to pray or to praise. Worship begins NOT in the heart of humanity, but rather, it begins in the heart of God. In fact, God bends down to hear, to bless, to receive, to love, and to forgive well before we're moved to the same. If we are to understand worship, we must first discover that worship begins with God.

Sermon | "Joy in Prayer" | April 21
Sunday Apr 21, 2024
Sunday Apr 21, 2024
When Jesus teaches us to pray, 'Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name...,' He's teaching us to recall and pray through God's character - to recall and to rejoice in God's goodness, faithfulness, love, omnipotence, patience, etc. as a way of reminding of what is true. This is especially important when life seems to throw hardship and hurt our way. Prayer is an opportunity to recount God's nature and when we do...we'll find JOY in all circumstances.

Sermon | "Joy to Serve" | April 14
Sunday Apr 14, 2024
Sunday Apr 14, 2024
Jesus says that He came NOT to be served, but to serve. St. Paul reminds us 'that it is better to give than to receive.' Nothing proclaims these truths louder than the cross and resurrection - a reminder that God willingly, and in love, gave His son to become a servant of all, a ransom for many, an offering poured out for the sake of the world. Having been anchored in the work of Christ Jesus - we then, are free to serve. When we do, we'll find...serving produces JOY.

Sermon | "Joy From Freedom" | April 7

Humans are more than what they produce. They are more than what they do. And yet, so many of us feel shackled to the burden of 'proving ourselves.' This is often the case in our relationship with God: working hard to prove our worth and value, placing too much confidence in our own abilities, looking for approval and validation from the world. And yet, St. Paul calls all of that...rubbish. The resurrection sets us free from the need to prove our worth...and when we taste that freedom...we experience JOY.

The World has changed! Eternity has been unlocked! The evil one is overthrown! This is the simple, and yet profound, truth of the resurrection. This, this has been the destination of Jesus' pilgrimage all along - to secure our life and future - to ensure that we will be with Him forever. He is risen! He has risen, indeed! Alleluia!
