Somehow, over time, our understanding of heaven got a bit off. It's not that our understanding of heaven is incorrect, it's just incomplete. Far too many Christians think about heaven as a place they will go - some ethereal city in the clouds - rather than a place that is coming and will come to us...on earth. This creation, with all of its beauty and brokenness was created by God himself, and will be recreated in the Kingdom to come. The good news of Christ's coming kingdom is not only heaven...but earth as well. This is the old testament promise for a new testament people.

Often times, when Jesus describes the coming kingdom, the picture doesn't inspire a lot of joy. In fact, for some...there is fear. So which is it? Is the coming kingdom of God something to rejoice in or something to fear? Is the coming kingdom of God about judgement or hope? As we draw to the end of the church year - we reflect on God's coming kingdom and what it means for us as followers of Jesus.

When one looks at the global church it becomes exponentially apparent that the American Church (and those in it) are incredibly wealthy. The hard question is 'what will we do with all that wealth'. When we count all things as loss for the sake of Christ, and when we trust that He will provide what's needed when it's needed, then, in peace, we can use that wealth for the sake of our neighbors. In peace and trust, that wealth becomes an incredible tool for compassion, care, ministry and mission. There is a cost to a whole-hearted following of Jesus and His way. But, for the sake of the world, it's absolutely worth it.

Fear and trust have an interesting relationship - often dancing with one another; sometimes beautifully and, at other times, violently. When it comes to possessions and finances fear and trust are always under the surface. Will I have enough? What happens if? Will I ever recover? God will provide...but when? We believe that God does provide what we need when we need it. We pray for daily bread - for His provision every day. There is a cost to a whole-hearted following of Jesus and His way. Counting the cost includes a daily provision.

Why does something have value? What gives it its value? Why is one thing valuable to one person while it has no value to another? There are things in our lives that are "worth" a lot and because that's true - we hold them close to our heart. But, what if God requires that we give that which is close to our heart to Him? What if that thing of value has, unknowingly, become an idol in our lives? Would we lay it at the feet of Jesus? There is a cost to a whole-hearted following of Jesus and His way. It's worth counting the cost.
