Sunday Jan 05, 2025
As we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus, we reflect on how Christ, the Light of the World, comes to us through the waters of baptism. In John’s Gospel, the Word becomes flesh, bringing light into a world of darkness. Through our baptism, we are joined to this Light—Jesus illuminates who we truly are in Him. We are more than the circumstances we find ourselves in; we are God’s beloved children, chosen and illuminated by His light.

Elizabeth’s response to Mary’s visit shatters assumptions. Who could have expected that a young, unwed girl from Nazareth would carry the Messiah? This week, we explore the assumptions we often carry about who God is, who He works through, and how He operates in the world. Elizabeth’s joyful question, "Why is this granted to me?" shows us that God’s plans often go against our preconceived notions. He works through unlikely people and in unexpected places.

This week focuses on the unexpected ways God works. The first witnesses to the birth of Jesus were not kings or religious leaders, but lowly shepherds—ordinary people in an unexpected place. Luke's account reveals that God's plan often defies our expectations. We might think that God only works through the powerful and influential, but God chooses the humble and the overlooked to announce His most important news.

The second week of Advent explores the deep unease and anxiety that Mary must have felt when the angel Gabriel delivered the overwhelming news that she would bear the Son of God. Mary’s response, “Let it be to me according to your word,” is a profound statement of faith in the face of uncertainty and discomfort. This reminds us that God often calls us into places that provoke fear and anxiety, yet He promises to be with us in those moments.

Sermon | "Who is Coming for Us?" | December 1
Sunday Dec 01, 2024
Sunday Dec 01, 2024
In the first week of Advent, we begin by asking: Who is the One who comes for us? The answer is overwhelming and literally awe-some. The God of the universe, the Alpha and Omega—the One who is outside of time and space—chooses to enter our world as a baby. This passage from Revelation paints a cosmic picture of Jesus, reminding us of His eternal nature. And yet, this is the same God who entered into the messiness of human existence. The incarnation is the ultimate act of love, as the eternal God comes to be with us.
