As the church hymn reminds us, we are prone to wander; wandering away from the One Who loved us, sought us, bought us, paid for us with the blood of His son. Our affection is given to so many other things - other gods. Being a follower of Jesus, and entering through the doorway of discipleship, means full allegiance to His rule. Jesus begins the sermon, for disciples and crowds, with a proclamation of the gospel - the Kingdom of heaven is present and it IS for the spiritually poor. The Poor in Spirit are in possession of God’s present rule in Christ.
Those who are spiritually poor are in a condition or state where they can’t save themselves, looking for help from somewhere or someone. Jesus’ first blessing is for all humanity, for all fall short of God’s glory.
Holding onto this hope, those who are poor is spirit are led to mourning even as they look forward to the comfort that will come in the new creation.

When Herod learned of the birth of the “King of the Jews”, his pursuit wasn't really for worship but rather to rule. Power has always been magnetic; it draws people in. It’s siren call promises peace when we can point it toward our priorities. But this power, wielded by a King in diapers, needs no such redirecting to bring peace to us and the whole world with us.
