Sermon | ”Just Do It: More Than a Catchy Slogan” | February 20

While this may be overgeneralizing, it seems there are two kinds of people in the world: those who love to generate ideas and those who want to accomplish tasks. When "do-ers" sit in a room with idea people, they're often frustrated the meeting lasted 4 hours without any action steps to be taken. "Can someone just tell me what they want me to do?" Far too often, people think of Jesus' teachings as ideas - just different ways to think about the world. But, nothing could be further from the truth. Jesus commands us to live in particular ways! He commands us to do something. For those who are asking, "Can someone just tell me what to do?" - the answer is YES. Jesus will.

Sermon | ”Upside Down or Right Side Up” | February 13

Sometimes, Jesus seems upside-down!  In the first sermon directed at His disciples, Jesus focuses His introduction on the characteristics of those who are IN the Way of Life and those who aren't. Akin to Psalm 1, there is no room for middle ground or fence riding: you are either in the Way of life/blessedness or you are not; you are either longing for the richness of what is to come or you are satisfied with the shallow riches of this present world; you are either laughing in spite of your circumstance or laughing and ignoring your reality. The Way isn't upside down, it's right side up.

At present, our world feels pretty chaotic. And most of us are trying to simply navigate the chaos as best we can. We want it to affect us as little as possible. But, what if God is calling us to actually step deeper into chaos. What if He knows that it's IN the chaos where people most need to hear the gospel and where there will be the largest harvest. Peter is told to head into the deep waters...and against his better judgment he acts in faith, and discovers the most fish in the place he least expects them. Jesus promises to be with us always...so let's venture into the deep, into the chaos.

Musician Keith Richards said, "If you're going to kick authority in the teeth, you might as well use both feet." It seems Keith might have a problem with authority?! Shockingly, he's not the only one: far too many people have chosen to seize power and authority rather than surrender it. When we encounter Jesus, do we surrender our power and authority or do we seize it and keep it? Jesus, as the Son of God, sets out with AUTHORITY to bring release for those who are held captive by physical and/or spiritual sickness. And in so doing, brings the future into the present.  Today, we discover what the full-life in Christ is when we surrender to the Authority of the Word made flesh.

Some say 'everything I need to know I learned in kindergarten'. To what extent is that true? Does the same apply to Sunday School? Have you moved beyond your understanding of Jesus, as you first came to know Him? Are you open to there being more? Jesus offers release. But to be released...from what holds us back and into what He's prepared...we have to be open to seeing what we didn't know we were missing. Are you open? Are you willing to become open?
